Wireless VIS

wireless

Since the development of armoured warfare, the need for dismounted combat troops, or crew, to communicate with their platform has been an operational requirement. Traditionally, this has been achieved by the use of expensive, heavy Combat Net Radio or by ‘Tank Telephone’.

With the introduction of lightweight, low cost Infantry Assault Radios in the 1990s inter Squad/Section communications was made very efficient, dramatically improving local Command and Control. Cobham has integrated this inexpensive technology into its ROVIS, LV2 and Tac G2 vehicle intercom systems extending, for the first time, the complete facilities of the Vehicle Intercom System to the dismounted Crew or Infantry.

Today, when significant combat power is available from support vehicles, this fully integrated communications between soldiers on the ground and their host vehicle improves Combat Efficiency and Mission Success and has been clearly shown to save lives in the high stress environment of combat.

Wireless VIS is normally based around Cobham’s own Eagle radio, as described below but can be made available utilising most leading makes of Infantry Assault Radios. The full range of capabilities may not be available if radios other than Eagle are employed.

VIS dismounted capability from Cobham Eagle (Close Combat Radio)

  • Full duplex voice and data communications among the dismounted soldiers
  • Full duplex access to the Vehicle Intercom for dismounted soldiers (within any security limits which may be in force) including
    • monitor selected Combat Net Radios
    • transmit, via the Assault Radio, over selected vehicle mounted Combat Net Radios
    • transmit data between the Assault Radio and the platform whilst maintaining simultaneous voice access in both directions
    • transmit data between the Assault Radio and selected Combat Net Radios
    • maintain up-to-date Situation Awareness when combined with Cobham BMS and IDSS,
    • Greater geographical separation between platform and dismounted troops

Benefits from an efficient extension of the Vehicle Intercom to ground troops
