Division Profile

Nurad Technologies, Inc., a division of Cobham Defense Electronic Systems, is your single source for antennas, radomes and integrated antenna/radome systems. Nurad is a world-class manufacturer of RF, microwave and millimeter products for aerospace and defense applications such as Electronic Warfare (EW) and Communications, Navigation, and Identification (CNI). Nurad has the facilities, personnel and experience to produce antennas and radomes that satisfy the most demanding performance and environmental conditions, including military aircraft, launch vehicles, munitions, UAVs, shipboard and ground mobile systems.

Founded in 1965, Nurad Technologies has distinguished itself as a world leader in the design, development and production of antennas and radomes for Electronic Warfare (EW) and Communication, Navigation and Identification (CNI) applications. Nurad antennas are currently deployed on many fighter aircraft, ships, and tracked vehicles worldwide. Nurad has accomplished this by building a unique and powerful portfolio of antenna and radome technology, as well as designing for specific customer and platform needs.

Nurad successfully grew this EW antenna and radome business throughout the 1970s, becoming a key supplier to the major military aircraft prime contractors, including Lockheed, General Dynamics, McDonnell Douglas, Northrop and Grumman. In the mid 1970s Nurad also worked with ABC to pioneer Electronic News Gathering (ENG), developing antennas, radomes and control systems that enabled real-time video reporting from remote news sites. The ENG business motivated an expansion of Nurad's technical portfolio, to include reflector antennas and feeds, large radomes, helix antennas, mechanical positioners, and control electronics. These successful business areas enabled company growth, so that by the mid 1980s Nurad's headcount exceeded 300.

In the early 1990s Nurad refocused its business on core defense antenna and radome technologies, reduced size and divested itself of the commercial ENG and radio product lines. In response to tremendous commercial wireless market demand, in the mid 1990s Nurad developed Local Multipoint Distribution System (LMDS) antennas and radomes, which set cost, and performance benchmarks for the industry.

The Nurad staff is composed of approximately 125 highly trained engineers, technicians, business professionals and support staff. Nurad's modern facility is located at 3310 Carlins Park Drive in Baltimore, Maryland and has over 75,000 square feet of manufacturing, test, engineering and administrative space, along with seven additional acres for future expansion.

Approximately two-thirds of Nurad's 75,000 square foot facility is devoted to manufacturing. This AS-9100 approved facility is outfitted with state-of-the-art machining, radome and composite processing, assembly equipment and a newly added 10 x 30 foot autoclave. Specific capabilities include Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) milling machines, pressurized autoclaves and comprehensive paint and finishing facilities.

In addition, Nurad has the support of a large and well-established parent company, Cobham plc. Cobham is a UK-based aerospace company with over 60 years experience in avionics, flight operation services and manufacturing. Cobham plc generates over $2 billion in annual sales and employs over 11,000 people worldwide.
